There's a similar idea in chemistry -- there's a rate-limiting step in a reaction, and it's the slowest step in the reaction mechanism. To cut down on the time a reaction needs to take place, a catalyst is added. The catalyst doesn't speed up the entire mechanism -- just the rate-limiting step. Ergo, the entire thing goes faster!
