Pzizz Sleep Science - now there is an app for that!

A few years ago, I became an avid user of a product called "Pzizz".  In the words of their website, Pzizz is a "a unique audio system that helps you nap during the day or get to sleep at night, " as well as helping you "Solve sleep problems, boost energy and reduce stress."

The original version of Pzizz that I purchased is an application that runs on your computer, then generates a custom sound file you can play on your iPod or other music player.  Pzizz allows you to create "nap soundtracks" that use scientifically designed audio to help you sleep.  You can create two kinds of naps with Pzizz:

  1. "Sleep naps" which help you get to sleep and influences your sleep in a way that helps you get a good, deep sleep and wake up refreshed.
  2. "Energizer naps" which help you take a short nap and wake up feeling refreshed.

I am a huge fan of Pzizz - especially for jet lag and long, grueling trade shows.  I wrote about my experiences with it here in two posts: "Pzizz: State Of The Art Power Napping" and  my "Pzizz Field Update."

Recently, I discovered that there are two iPhone apps for Pzizz - one for Sleep naps and one for Energizer naps.  I bought them both a few weeks ago in the App Store - very reasonably priced, and they work like a charm.  Click the links below to see them in the App Store.  Enjoy!

Digging out from under stuff

I spent this week on the east coast of the US, where there's just been a huge snowstorm.  I ended up getting stranded for a couple of days, which disrupted quite a few aspects of my plans.  I thought this was a great metaphor for work, and came up with a few parallels.

Plan ahead

One thing I did right on this trip was check the weather report before flying from the west coast to the east coast.  I found out it was very cold, and that a snowstorm was very likely.

As a result, I was able to bring a heavy coat an gloves, plus some extra clothing in case I got stuck.  I also did some research on alternate flights and methods of transportation - just in case.

I was traveling with two colleagues, so I made sure they were aware of what was coming so they could plan, as well.

Look for options

When our flight got canceled on the first day of the snow storm, we explored our options:  wait for a flight the next day, or drive to our next city.  We asked for a lot of advice from others, looked at weather forecasts, etc. and eventually decided to stay put for the first night and wait it out.  Why?  See the next point.

We also explored options for places to stay for the next couple of nights (just in case) and booked a room at a local hotel - with free WiFi, even.

Figure out your priorities

On the first day, one of the options was to drive on to our next city (about a 4-hour drive in normal conditions).  We decided that:

  • The weather was too nasty for us to safely drive - especially at night, which is what we'd have been doing;
  • The meeting we were heading to was less important than our safety;
  • We could still get a lot of work done from the hotel.

In other words, our meeting wasn't worth risking our necks for.

Know your limits

The next day, all flights out were cancelled again!  At this point, we got a little tired of waiting around so we ventured out in our rental car.  The roads seemed pretty good, even though the planes weren't flying.  We didn't make this decision without testing our limits to make sure we could handle the situation.

We decided to go for it, but wanted some insurance (so to speak).  Working with the most helpful Avis car rental employee I've ever met (Nancy in Clarksburg, West Virgina), we managed to swap our little car for a big 4-wheel drive SUV (the last one available because it wasn't officially available - thanks, Nancy!)

Comfortable that we could drive safely, we decided to brave the roads.

Don't be afraid to ask for help

All along the way, we asked for help from others - advice from the people at the hotel; assistance from the aforementioned Nancy at Avis; help and advice from the (also friendly) United Airlines people at the Clarsburg airport; and more.  We couldn't have been successful without their help.

And we weren't shy about asking (nicely, of course).

The payoff?

  • We got to our next city in good time, safe the whole way.
  • We only missed one of our meetings, and got to our destination at least a day earlier than if we'd waited for a flight.
  • Nancy at Avis connected us with a couple of very nice folks who also wanted to go to our next city, and we decided to give them a ride (ironically, they didn't ask for help but they were lucky enough to have Nancy as a "matchmaker" to put us together so all 5 of us could be successful).
  • We learned the value of "good people" and being open to help from other people.

To net this out, when you feel overwhelmed, stuck, and helpless, try this:

  • Plan Ahead,
  • Look For Options,
  • Figure Out Your Priorities,
  • Know Your Limits,
  • Don't Be Afraid To Ask For Help.

Portable Wi-Fi access for my iPad

In spite of my initial desire to wait for version 2, I caved and decided to get an iPad. I got the Wi-Fi only version, rather than the one with built-in 3G.

The quandary now, is that I sometimes find myself in situations where I don't have access to a Wi-Fi signal (I travel a lot). For my laptop, I have a USB broadband modem which allows me to get on the internet. The iPad, however, doesn't have a USB port, so I couldn't use the USB broadband modem with my iPad.

I have found a great solution, though: the Cradlepoint PHS-300 personal hotspot. This is a small, battery powered device (rechargeable) that I plug my USB broadband modem into. It provides power to the modem, which then connects to my wireless carrier's broadband network. The PHS-300 then acts as a wireless hotspot, enabling me to share my broadband connection among up to 16 devices.

So far, this thing has worked like a charm. I used it for about 3 hours yesterday because I didn't want to pay $14.95 for a daypass on the local Wi-Fi provider. I surfed on my iPad the whole time, and it worked flawlessly.

The device works with just about any 3G or 4G USB modem you can throw at it, worldwide. I happen to have AT&T (as you can see from my picture above, but have verified that it works with my friend's WiMax (4G) modem without problems. AT&T Data Plans, Your iPhone, & International Travel

If, like me, you’re a smart phone user and you travel outside the country, you’ll need to figure out how to deal with your AT&T data plan lest you find yourself with a ridiculously high mobile phone bill.

My best-known methods

Here are my current best practices (told through the lens of an iPhone user – if you use a different smart phone, you can make these changes by accessing your account through the AT&T Wireless web site):

  • Install the free AT&T myWireless iPhone app on your phone. This will let you change your account settings on demand, right from your phone.IMG_0461
  • The day you leave (preferrably, while still in the US), use the app to add an international data plan to your phone (see screen shot). You’ll notice I also turn on the “World Traveler” feature, which gets me discounted rates for calls while I’m traveling abroad. These changes will go into effect the day you make the change, and will be pro-rated on your bill based on the start and end dates for each feature.
  • [Update April 12, 2010: AT&T is unpredictable about how quickly you get the benefit of your data plan, as I found out when I got an unexpectedly high bill after a recent trip. They can fix it up afterward if you rant enough, but it is easier to call them right after you add the feature and let them know you need the all of the extra data *right now* and not over time. They can do that - don't take no for an answer.]
  • Be careful while traveling abroad, as wireless data usage can mount quickly. Some data hogs:
    • Synchronizing your email, especially if you receive a lot of email
    • Uploading pictures (whether to Twitter, sending via email, or otherwise sending them to anyone else)
    • Using your phone for Skype calls over the 3G data network (using it over Wi-Fi is fine)
    • Downloading large apps or songs over the 3G data network (again, not a problem on Wi-Fi)
    • Using Google Maps a lot (it is very “chatty” and downloads lots of map data, etc.)
    • Listening or watching streaming media (YouTube, internet radio, etc.)
  • Use Wi-Fi (especially free hotspots) where you can, as this will allow you to handle large amounts of data in an unmetered way.
  • When you return to the US, wait a day (just to be safe) then use the AT&T myWireless app to turn off the international data plan. Again, you’ll pay a pro-rated fee based on the start & end dates for which the plan was in effect.

What if you forget?

AT&T has gotten better at helping users understand this, it seems. I landed in Amsterdam this week and, upon turning on my phone and joining the mobile network, I received the following text message:

datawarning I was tired, so I ignored this message. After a nap, I wandered around Amsterdam, looking up things on Google maps and Bing (yes, there’s an app for Bing), etc. That evening I got second text message from AT&T:

Act Now!

When you get the “data usage is very high” message, it means you’ve gone over 20Mb of cellular data which, if you do the math, will cost you nearly $400! If you see this message, call the number immediately and ask them to add the International Data Plan to your phone right away! If it’s before midnight in the US, the data plan will apply to all your usage earlier in the day, back to the previous midnight – this can help drastically reduce your charges (I happened to have only about $5 of data that wasn’t covered when I called them).

I’m documenting this here in the hopes I can make someone else’s international travel a bit less stressful. Happy landings!

The glory of unexpected unplugging

My family and I went on a short ski vacation this past week.  I'd planned to do a bit of blogging and other online 'stuff' during the trip but found that the condo we rented was totally out of any kind of data range (no data on my iPhone, no data on my laptop, not WiFi, etc.) 

MtHoodFlag I was a little annoyed at first, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise.  I decided to treat my lack of connectivity as a sign I should just relax and enjoy the time away - and I'm glad I did.

If you (like me) are in the habit of staying plugged in during your vacations, I suggest you try to spend a few days off the grid (totally - not just faking it) and see if you enjoy it as much as I did.

On the plus side:

  • The camera on my iPhone worked great even if I had not data signal, and I was able to snap the shot in this post (click for larger view);
  • I got a bit of reading done between the skiing and playing board games by the fire which means I'll be posting some book reviews (and a couple of gadget reviews) soon.
